Vehicle Wraps and Hard Proofs

Posted on by Jeremy in Design, Vehicles, wraps | Leave a comment

Decades ago, (vehicle wraps at that time were called “custom paint”), if you were going to have a job designed and produced, the only way to see what the final product would look like was by having a hard, tangible proof made. In the 50’s and 60’s (the Mad Men era), these were hand drawn comps by the artist. Eventually, color keys (four layers of colored acetate on top of each other) became prominent and then MatchPrint composite proofs. However, these were time consuming and expensive. Once high quality ink jet printers came onto the scene, proofing became faster and cheaper for the client.

Then we entered the age of the Internet. Suddenly, designers could send electronic proofs to their clients and get instant feedback. The production process started moving at light speed now that proofing was instantaneous.  What once used to take weeks to get a job through the design, proofing & production phases could now be accomplished in days, sometimes hours! Vehicle Wraps-How Much Do They Cost?

Posted on by Jeremy in Advertising, Design, Vehicles, wraps | 3 Comments

Today, we start a new series of Frequently Asked Questions about vehicle wraps. The first and most common question that a client asks is “How much does a vehicle wrap cost?” Like a lot of things, that’s an open-ended question. It’s similar to asking “How much does a car cost?” or “How much does a computer cost?” As we managed to learn more about Denver auto wraps, it became clear that vehicle wrap pricing is dependent on several factors, which will be considered below. It’s always fun when a client gives you a lot of leeway with the creativity for their vehicle wrap. The only direction for this project was “make it colorful!” Daisy Exchange is a retail resale shop that sells trendy clothing. If you walk into one of their stores, you’ll see they are decorated in a colorful and vivid atmosphere. We looked to replicate that vibe in their HHR vehicle wraps. A really fun project to work on, so keep your eye out for one of these HHRs running around Oklahoma City and one in Tulsa!

OTRD Ford Explorer Vehicle Wrap

This vehicle wrap project came to us via Jordan Advertising for the Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department. The vehicle was donated by the Oklahoma Ford Dealers, thus 3 parties were involved in the approval process. A rough mockup had been provided for the design that had to be followed exactly. Oh, and did we mention that we had a little under two weeks to get artwork done, approved, printed and installed in order for the vehicle to be ready for a conference? Installation took about two days and then another half day for the grill alone? We made the deadline and all parties involved were extremely happy with the results.

Lawns Plus Truck

This was a fun partial wrap for Mike Atkinson at Lawns Plus. His previous truck was white and we just splashed the logo across it at the same angle as this one. But when Mike purchased a new truck, he wanted to step up the graphics a bit. The gray paint had a lot of blue metallic in it. I added some blue to the logo, which had previously just been green & black for the most part. The Lawn Plus business cards had the logo sitting in grass, so Mike suggested a similar look. Wrapping the entire cab was out of the question since we would be unable to match the metallic paint. The solution was to die-cut the entire piece of artwork. It was a fairly lengthy process, setting up the diecut of a complex logo and all the grass, especially since there had to appear to be grass in front of AND behind the logo shield.

Mike was incredibly pleased with the end result. I too was incredibly pleased with the way it looked after installation. I always tell first time clients that the proof that they see is about 75% accurate, it’s going to look much better when it’s actually on the vehicle. In this case, I would say the proof was about 60% accurate, the final result exceeded everyone’s expectations.
